The Eclipse SDK 4.0 had been released on July 28th, 2010 just two days ago. The goals for this release are to be the next generation platform for building eclipse-based tools and rich client desktop application. This new release makes it easier for developers to develop and assemble applications and tools based on the Eclipse platform.

This article will show you how to install Eclipse SDK 4.0 on Linux, in this I use Slackware 13.1.

First of all, I assume you already installed the Java Development Kit (JDK) in your system. If not you can follow my previous article on how to install JDK on Linux.

1. Download Eclipse SDK 4.0

Go to Eclipse Release Build: 4.0 download page. Select the Linux Platform, in this I use x86/GTK 2 Platform. Then click the (http) link in the download column, you will be redirected to a mirror site nearest to you.

2. Extract the file using tar tool

Once the file has been downloaded successfully, extract or untar using the tar tool as follow:

tar zxf eclipse-SDK-4.0-linux-gtk.tar.gz

3. Change to eclipse directory

After extracting the file, an eclipse directory should be created in your current working directory. Go to the eclipse directory.

cd eclipse

4. Run eclipse

Now it is the time to run the Eclipse SDK 4.0

./eclipse

Eclipse is a powerful and robust integrated development environment (IDE). For many people it is the ‘de facto’ IDE to code Java, C/C++, Javascript, PHP and et cetera.

This article shows you how to install PHP Plugin or PHP Development Tools (PDT) into Eclipse aka Galileo.

1. Run Eclipse then click Help > Install New Software…

2. In the Install Available Software window, select the Galileo update in the ‘Work with’ field.

Scroll down to find ‘Programming Language’ category name and expand it. Then check/select the ‘PHP Development Tools (PDT) SDK Feature’

3. Click ‘Next >’ and then just accept the terms of the license agreements, and click Finish button.

4. Wait for a couple of minutes to let the installation process install the PHP plugin.

5. Once the installation has completed, it is better to restart the Eclipse.

Now you are ready to write PHP codes using Eclipse.

The Eclipse Foundation pleased to announce that Eclipse 3.6.0 a.k.a Helios RC2 packages are available for download and testing. The current available supported platforms are Windows, Mac and Linux both 32bit and 64bit. The final Helios release planed to be available in June 23, 2010. You can find more details and download the files here.

In this tutorial I want to show you how to install Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) on Linux. This tutorial should be applicable to various Linux distributions such as Slackware, Ubuntu, Fedora, Centos, Redhat and others.

To follow this tutorial, you must already have the JDK (Java Development Kit) installed in the system. If not you can follow my tutorial on how to install JDK on Linux.

1. Download the Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo)

Go to Eclipse website and download the latest version of Eclipse. Choose which platform you use, 32bit or 64bit architecture. You should forwarded to a mirror site nearest to you.

2. Extract the downloaded file.

The file is in .tar.gz file so you need to extract it.

$ tar zxf eclipse-SDK-3.5.2-linux-gtk.tar.gz

The ‘eclipse’ folder will be created in your current working directory.

3. Move the ‘eclipse’ to your home directory.

You can skip this step but I’d rather put this folder in my home directory.

$ mv eclipse /home/fuad

4. Run the Eclipse IDE

Go to eclipse HOME directory and run eclipse from there.

$ cd /home/fuad/eclipse
$ $ ./eclipse &

5. Create a desktop shortcut

To make it easy so later you do not need to run it manually using command line, it is better to create a desktop shortcut for Eclipse.
Right click on the desktop and select ‘Create Launcher…’

On the desktop should be created the shortcut icon.

You want to install Google Plugin (e.g Google Web Toolkit aka GWT and Google App Engine Java SDK) in Eclipse.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to install Google Plugin for Eclipse on Eclipse 3.4 aka Ganymede.
Here are the steps:
Run Eclipse and go to Help > Software Updates…
Click Add Site… and paste this URL in the Location field then click OK

http://dl.google.com/eclipse/plugin/3.4

Eclipse will automatically retrieve and detect the available plugins. Then you will see the Plugins and the SDKs.
Select which plugins you want to install then click Install… button. Wait for some minutes to let Eclipse install the plugins.

After the installation is successful, Eclipse need to be restarted for the change to take effect.
