The goals for this release are to be the next generation platform for building eclipse-based tools and rich client desktop application. This new release makes it easier for developers to develop and assemble applications and tools based on the Eclipse platform.

This article will show you how to install Eclipse SDK 4.0 on Linux, in this I use Slackware 13.1.

First of all, I assume you already installed the Java Development Kit (JDK) in your system. If not you can follow my previous article on how to install JDK on Linux.

1. Download Eclipse SDK 4.0

Go to Eclipse Release Build: 4.0 download page. Select the Linux Platform, in this I use x86/GTK 2 Platform. Then click the (http) link in the download column, you will be redirected to a mirror site nearest to you.

2. Extract the file using tar tool

Once the file has been downloaded successfully, extract or untar using the tar tool as follow:

tar zxf eclipse-SDK-4.0-linux-gtk.tar.gz

3. Change to eclipse directory

After extracting the file, an eclipse directory should be created in your current working directory. Go to the eclipse directory.

cd eclipse

4. Run eclipse

Now it is the time to run the Eclipse SDK 4.0

./eclipse

That’s it. Below is the screenshot of Eclipse SDK 4.0 running on Linux Slackware 13.1

Eclipse SDK 4.0 Screenshot (click to enlarge)

I just downloaded the latest Zend Framework 1.10.6 to test creating web applications using Zend Framework. I have also already installed Netbeans 6.9 for writing Java and PHP codes. The operating system I use is Linux Slackware 13.1.

At the beginning, creating Zend projects are fine, meaning without encountered any warning/error messages. But after adding the Zend Framework to the Netbeans IDE, I could not create Zend web project. The error messages warned me that “PHP Warning: include_once(NetBeansCommandsProvider.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /path/to/zend/library/Zend/Loader.php on line 146″

This is already reported and discussed in the Netbeans bugzilla. It seems to be zend’s bug. The .zf.ini file, located in your $HOME directory, generated by zend tools has a wrong configuration. If you check the content of the .zf.ini file, there is incorrect in ‘php.includepath’ which should be ‘php.include_path’.

To solve this, just open the .zf.ini file and change the ‘php.includepath’ to be ‘php.include_path’. That’s it. Now try to create a new project using zf.sh/zf.php in command line interface. The new project should be created without any errors.

$ php bin/zf.php create project testproject

The current latest stable version is v2.6.1.

This tutorial will show you how to install Flock 2.6.1 on Slackware 13.1.

Here are the steps:

1. Download the Flock Browser
Go to http://www.flock.com/ and enter your email address into the download text field.

2. Extract the file
Extract the file using ‘tar’ tool and move the folder to the safest location. I just moved it to $HOME directory and rename it as ‘flock-browser’.

$ tar jxf flock-2.6.1.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2
$ mv flock /home/fuad/flock-browser

That’s it. You are ready to run the Flock browser.

3. Run the Flock browser (via command line)
To run the Flock broser via command line, simply run the ‘flock-browser’ located in flock folder installation.

$ /home/fuad/flock-browser/flock-browser

4. Create a Launcher in the Desktop
To make it easy, create a launcher of Flock in the Desktop so you do not need to run it manually via command line.

Flock Launcher

In this tutorial I want to show you how to install Opera Browser 10.60 on Linux (in this case I use Slackware 13.1).

Below are the steps:

1. Download source file

You can find the release details here.

This tutorial will guide how to install it on Slackware 13.1 using the tarbal installer file.

Here are the step by step:

1. Download the Oracle Solaris Studio Express 6/10
Go to http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/express/thankyou.jsp to download the file.
Slackware is not an RPM package format (though you can convert RPM file to TGZ using ‘rpm2tgz’ tool) I will use option 2 (the tarbal file) in this tutorial.

2. Untar and extract the file
Once you finish the download file, untar and extract the tarbal file.

$ tar jxf SolarisStudioExpress2010-06-lin-x86.tar.bz2

A folder named ‘solstudioex1006′ will be created in the current working directory.

3. Run the ‘sunstudio’ file
Definitely you are now ready to run the Solaris Studio Express. It is simply by running the ‘sunstudio’ file installed in ‘solstudioex1006/bin’ directory. Run the file then accept the licence agreement and you are done.

$ /home/fuad/Softwares/solstudioex1006/bin/sunstudio

You can simply ignore the warning messages above.

Slackware 13.1 had been released on May 25th, 2010 that brings with it many major improvements, like KDE SC version 4.4.3, the 2.6.33.4 Linux kernel, a new toolchain, updated libraries, and major applications such as Firefox and Thunderbird.

This tutorial will show you on how to install Google Chrome Browser on Slackware 13.1.
Basically there are already plenty of tutorials about this on the net but this is the easiest way to install it.

Here are the step by step:

1. Download Google Chrome Slackbuild
Go to Google Chrome Slackbuild repository page
http://slackbuilds.org/repository/13.1/network/google-chrome/ to get the files.
Download the google-chrome.tar.gz and google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb (32bit) or google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb (64bit) depending on which arch you are using.

2. Extract the google-chrome.tar.gz file
Next step is to untar and extract the google-chrome.tar.gz.

tar zxf google-chrome.tar.gz

A folder named ‘google-chrome’ will be created in your current working directory.

3. Copy or move the google-chrome-xxx.deb file to the ‘google-chrome’ directory
The google chrome slackbuild script will try to find the google-chrome-xxx.deb file. If it is not found, the script will break telling you that there is not such file or directory.

cp google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb google-chrome

4. Building google chrome slackware package
Go to google-chrome directory. Make sure the ‘google-chrome.SlackBuild’ is executable.

cd google-chrome

If you are a Linux user and located in Windows Workgroups, sometime you want to access Windows machines to copy some files from them through network. In windows, you can simply open windows explorer and type \\hostname or \\ipaddress of the target that you want to access.
In Linux, you need to activate samba file system (smbfs) to be able to access or see windows workgroups. In Slackware Linux distro (I am using Slackware 13.0_64bit) the smbfs module is not loaded by default. So first thing you have to do is load the smbfs module.

To check the smbfs module is already loaded or not, run ‘lsmod’ to list the loaded modules.

lsmod |grep smbfs

We can see above that the smbfs module is not loaded yet. To load the module, use ‘modprobe smbfs’ command.

modprobe smbfs
lsmod |grep smb
smbfs                  67704  0

The smbfs module is now loaded with 67704 byte size and 0 application used it.
From now you are ready to access windows machines through network.

Since I am using KDE and XFCE for my window manager, the easiest way is using Konqueror (the default web browser, file manager and document viewer of KDE).
You should be able to use nautilus if you use Gnome.

Run Konqueror > Network Folders > Samba Shares.

Konqueror (click to enlarge)

You can see available Windows workgroups that you can access directly from Linux.

I use Slackware Linux as the main operating system. Today I wanna upgrade some softwares installed on my system like Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird and etc. Currently the firefox version installed in my system is version 3.0.8. The latest version of firefox is 3.5 so I wanna upgrade it and other softwares too. To update/upgrade Slackware I use ‘slapt-get’, an apt-get like tool to upgrade software in debian families.

The ‘slapt-get -u’ for updating the list of available upgraded softwares is fine but while executing the ‘slapt-get –upgrade’ to upgrade the available softwares was failed with an error message “Failed to download: Incomplete download”. Retrying the same way three times still got the same result.

Here are how to fix this issue.
Basically this issue can be solved by reinstalling the slapt-get tool with the newest one.

So we have to remove the installaed slapt-get first.

$ sudo removepkg slapt-get
$ sudo rm -rf /etc/slapt-get

Then download the latest slapt-get tool here and install it.

$ sudo installpkg sources/slapt-get-0.10.1c-i386-1.tgz

Currently the max speed can reach 7.2 Mbps (much more than enough for me to browse webs and download some files from internet). The speed you get will depend on your network cellular operator, whether you get the GPRS, 3G or HSDPA networks.

This tutorial is to help you installing the device on Linux, especially on Slackware 12.2 running kernel 2.6.27.7, installing softwares, and doing some configurations so we can dial using the modem to access internet. If you use Centos 5.4 or Fedora 12, click here for Centos 5.4 or here for Fedora 12 to follow the tutorials.
Here are the softwares you must have to follow this tutorial:
- huaweiAktBbo-i386.out. This tool is used to switch Huawei E220 to the correct mode for the serial ports.
You can download here
- wvstream (requirement for wvdial)
- wvdial (a tool for dialling the modem to your internet provider). You can download both wvstream and wvdial here.

I assume you already have pppd, gcc, and gnu make installed in your Linux system. If not, install them first!
To make it easier, create a directory /home/yours/download/huawei and store all the files above in it.

Lets go to the installations.
Firstly if you plug the modem in to the usb ports, the system will detect it automatically. Here are the logs on my
system after plugging in the modem to a usb port.

You can see above that the device is detected as a ‘Mass Storage’ and we will switch it to be the correct mode for

Change to the directory /home/yours/download/huawei. Make it executable and run it.

If there is no error, the tool run properly and the modem has been successfully switched to the correct mode serial ports.

Then, install wvstream and wvdial respectively. Install the wvstream first because it is a requirement before
installing the wvdial.

$ tar zxf wvstreams-4.6.tar.gz

If there is no error, the wvstream has been successfully installed in the system.
Now the next step is install the wvdial tool.

$ tar zxf wvdial-1.60.tar.gz

If there is no error, the tool has been successfully installed in /usr/local/bin directory or it depends on where you installed it.

The library files of wvstream and wvdial are installed in /usr/local/lib directory and you need to add this directory to /etc/ld.so.conf file and then run ‘sudo ldconfig’ to update the new installed shared libraries.

The next step, we will generate wvdial.conf file and store it in /etc folder. To generate it, we use ‘wvdialconf’ tool.

Run the below command and you will get logs showing on your screen like below:

$ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

Wow success. You can see I get the IP address and DNS address allocated dynamically from my cellular operator.

You have to manually put those DNS addresses in /etc/resolv.conf file because the ‘wvdial’ will not write automatically for you.

Then try to ping or browse to internet.
