How To Install VirtualBox on Linux Mint 12

VirtualBox is a software package that allows you to virtually install or run multiple operating systems, known as guest OS (such as Windows, Linux, BSD, Solaris, OS/2 and others) in a single computer / laptop. Currently VirtualBox can be installed in Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, and FreeBSD, known as host OS.

I have Linux Mint 12 installed on my Compaq Presario CQ42 Notebook PC. This post is mainly to show you how to install  VirtualBox 4.1 on Linux Mint 12.

Basically it’s already clearly explained in the VirtualBox Wiki page on how to install VBox on Linux. Since Linux Mint 12 is based on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, we will use this distribution platform to install it.

Add the below line in the /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian oneiric contrib

Add the Oracle VBox public key

wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Install the VirtualBox using apt-get script

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.1

Viola, VirtualBox 4.1 has been successfully installed in Linux Mint 12. Now you can run it either via terminal by issuing ‘virtualbox’ or via Menu.
