Setup L2TP VPN Windows 10

In previous post I had shown you how to setup L2TP VPN on macOS 10.12 Sierra. This time I will show you how to setup L2TP VPN Windows 10 using the configured Mikrotik L2TP Server.

It is recommended to use L2TP VPN rather than PPTP VPN because L2TP is more secure than PPTP. Setting up L2TP VPN in Windows 10 is easy and straight forward.

Follow the step-by-step below to setup L2TP VPN in Windows 10

Search VPN Settings

Click ‘Add a VPN Connection’

Inside the ‘Add a VPN Connection’ window, complete the settings like below:

VPN provider: Windows (built-in)
Connection name: set a name for this VPN connection e.g. My VPN Office
Server name or address: enter the VPN server here, it can be hostname or IP address
VPN type: L2TP/IPSec with pre-shared key
Pre-shared key: Enter the pre-shared key here
Type of sign-in info: User name and password

For example, here is my configuration

Once you finish adding a new VPN connection, the connection name will appear in the VPN settings as follows

Click on the connection name you will see three options: Connect, Advanced options, and Remove

Click on the Connect button to connect to the L2TP server

Enter your VPN account and password

Once authenticated, you will see the VPN connection status is Connected
