Upgrading to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

Apple officially released the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on 25th July last week. Introduced back in February 2012, it is the most awaited Apple’s operating system for desktop which brings more than 200 new features including Messages, Twitter integration, Notification, Reminder, Gatekeeper and Game Center.

I have MacBook Pro manufactured in early 2011 with OS X Lion installed. After reading about some reviews from popular tech sites, all of them give positive reviews on the OS X 10.8. For just $20, it is very worth it and a must-have upgrade for Mac owners which meet the requirements. I decided to purchase and upgrade to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on July 28th.

In my office, actually I have 10 Mbps dedicated bandwidth. With that amount of bandwidth,  the file (4.37 GB size) should be completely downloaded in less than 1 hour (around 50+ minutes), but since many Mac users around the world also simultaneously downloaded it at the same time, the download speed was very fluctuate. Sometime I got full speed of 10 Mbps, but sometime it decreased to just 5 Mbps or even 3. So it took around 2 hours for the download to complete.

Once the download is complete, the file is ‘Install OS X Mountain Lion‘ stored in Applications folder. Note that if you want to upgrade other Mac devices without downloading it again from the App Store, copy the installer file to other folders such as Downloads folder or copy it to your flash drive or hard disk. Because the system will delete the installer file after successful upgrade.

After you have made backup the installer file, go to Applications folder and run the file by double-clicking it. Follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade. The system will reboot and start upgrading. The upgrade process may vary depending on the device specifications and the current installed softwares. My early 2011 release of MacBook Pro which is powered by 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 with 4 GB of RAM, it took exactly one hour for the upgrading process to complete.

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

After installing the Mountain Lion, the boot time is now faster than on Lion. It takes only 40 seconds from the pressing power button to the login window (compared to Lion which takes 50 seconds). The Safari browser in Mountain Lion is also great. It loads most websites faster than before. Though I already fall in love with Google Chrome browser, the Safari 6 on OS X 10.8 is just amazing with the improvements, the iCloud and shared button.
